HYDERABAD: In its bid to ensure hassle-free ride to the airport at Shamshabad, the state government has hit upon a plan to construct an expressway flyover connecting the airport to the city.

The government had thought of a dedicated train to carry air travellers but the huge cost involved in making it a reality and the distant possibility of any private participation, are forcing the administration to explore other ways of reducing the problems for air travellers.

According to government sources, an elevated road, most probably, a flyover would be constructed between Mehdipatnam and airport having a distance of about 14 km.
This is expected to cost over Rs 500 crore and likely to be taken up on built operate and transfer (BOT) basis, it is learnt.

The vehicles will have to pay the toll tax like in many other foreign countries. Entire distance between airport and Mehdipatnam could be covered in about 10-15 minutes and in another 15 minutes time, the passengers can reach the city. It does not take more than half an hour for air travellers to reach here.

The government is of the opinion trains would never become substitutes for the four-wheelers, since cab drivers render personal service to passengers, while in the case of travel by train, the travellers have to carry their own baggage.
